Many OBUs used for paying tolls and other mileage charges are designed to work with the 2G mobile communications standard. This standard is gradually being replaced by 4G. Toll4Europe introduces a new on-board computer that communicates via 4G on the high frequency band at a speed of up to 10,000 Kbit/s.
“The introduction of the new 4G-enabled OBU reflects the dynamic development of the toll market: it illustrates technological progress, the increasing demands for flexibility and interoperability, and the growing need for sustainable solutions that can be used across Europe. At the same time, it takes into account the increasing customer demands for reliability, faster connectivity and intuitive use, thus setting new standards for a modern, user-oriented toll system,” said Felix Wex, CEO of Toll4Europe GmbH, based in Munich.
The new 4G OBU can easily replace a 2G model, as the existing EETS OBU connection cable can remain in place. It’s just plug and play. After the first start-up, the 4G OBU is automatically ready for use. Compared to the 2G model, the touchscreen, which was considered unsuitable by drivers, has also been removed and has been replaced by a large, more readable color screen. Toll4Europe has also improved the readability of the displays. A central rotary wheel and two shortcut keys allow you to go directly to the settings menu.
